I’m 24. I feel like I’m boxing demons but fuck it! Is there a worse demon than myself? I might as well embrace it and create that kind of self I will be happy to live with for the rest of my fleeting days here. I hope no-one’s reading but if you are, I hope you get a thing or two from this. Here are 24 pithy bits of unsolicited advice to me and my demons, or rather to myself.
THOU SHALL NOT BE BROKE
Cheap things are expensive.
There are no get rich quick schemes. That's just someone else getting rich off you
For every dollar you spend purchasing something substantial, expect to pay a dollar in repairs, maintenance, or disposal by the end of its life.
If you get your mind in order, everything else gets that much easier.
Learning never exhausts the mind
Being enthusiastic is worth 25 IQ points.
The Golden Rule will never fail you. It is the foundation of all other virtues.
Greatness is only possible if you believe, without any doubt, that the future is bright.
Play iterated games. All the returns in life, whether in wealth, relationships, or knowledge, come from compound interest.
Inspiration is perishable, act on it immediately
Regret will haunt you more than failure.
Learn to be kind without being a doormat, tolerant without being a degenerate, and strong without being an asshole.
There’s no them, it’s always you vs yourself.
Never lie to people that trust you, and never trust people that lie to you
Feeling sad after making a decision, doesn’t mean it was a wrong decision.
You are what you do. Not what you say, not what you believe, not how you vote, but what you spend your time on.
No matter what happens, you’re always the problem. Even if that isn’t true, better to act as if it is, so you can focus on solutions rather than pity.
Envy is an illusion. The part of the person that we envy doesn’t exist without the rest of that person. If we aren’t willing to trade places with them completely - their life, their body, their thoughts - then there is nothing to be envious about.
Life is not tiring. Wanting life to be a certain way but not having the confidence to make it that way, is tiring.
A fit body, a calm mind, a house full of love. These things cannot be bought-they must be earned.
There is nothing outside of yourself that can ever enable you to get better, stronger, richer, quicker, or smarter. Everything is within. Everything exists. Seek nothing outside of yourself.
Make your peace with death, and you will begin to see life differently.
RESERVE YOUR FUCKS FOR WHAT TRULY MATTERS.
